Almost two years ago, I was shopping with my schoolteacher daughter to buy Christmas gifts. This was for an initiative called the Jenny Tree, which provided, via donations, Christmas presents for children whose families budgets were stretched to their very limits.
But what shook me and still does, was that her ‘Gift’ list including pieces of school uniform. I can never explain properly, how I felt, knowing that there were children getting up on Christmas morning to open up Christmas presents and find nothing more than bits of school uniform inside! It was heart-breaking but it was so very wrong.
This feeling didn’t leave me throughout the whole of that Christmas holiday and then the idea finally came to me … we could work in the same way as Food Banks. But instead of buying groceries and tins of food, people could pick up a pack of shirts or a pair of trousers … and so began Back to School Bank.
